Alphabet Activities – Letter ‘A’ Activities

Alphabet Activities - Learning the Letter A

Alphabet Activities – Letter A Activities

The aim of these activities is to expose children to the letter Aa, identify what the letter Aa looks like and what sound it makes.  It is to provide an opportunity to talk about the letter, make connections with spoken language and real life experiences.

Learning the letter sound first and then the letter name are important for reading and writing development.

Paper Plate Apples

Apple Activities Paper Plate Apples - Letter A crafts

Paper Plate Apples are so simple to make and are really cute as a visual reminder of what the letter Aa looks like, the sound that it makes and that apple begins with this sound.  I really like the way the larger paper plate and the smaller paper plate represent the upper case (big letter) and lower case letters (little letter).  It is a great opportunity to get messy with paint, develop fine motor control, oral language development to discuss other concepts such as big and little, upper case and lower case letters and also different types of apples.

Treasure Hunt

Treasure Hunt for the Letter Aa

A Treasure Hunt for the Letter Aa involves looking for objects around the house or classroom beginning with the letter Aa or finding objects that have the letter Aa on it.  We found the letter Aa on a wooden puzzle and also on a book.  Once we found some items we placed it in the centre of the hoola hoop.

Treasure hunts are great for getting little bodies moving and little brains thinking.  This activity requires lots of talking, repetition and modelling from the parent or educator for children to understand the concept that words are made up of sounds and that some begin with the letter Aa sound.

Letter Puzzle and Match is a great activity for fine motor development, control and concentration.  It is also a great way to introduce the learning of the letter A.  This activity involves placing tokens, gem stones or pompoms onto the circles inside the shape of the letter Aa. Children become familiar and begin  recognise the shape of the letter Aa.

Apple Printing

Alphabet Activities for Toddlers Apple Printing

“Aa’ is for Apple and Apple Printing.

Apple Printing provides a great opportunity to talk about the letter Aa and shape of the apple when presssed into paint and onto paper.  When an apple is cut down the middle from the stem it creates a heart or butterfly shape and when it is cut through the centre from the rounded part of the apple, it makes a cirlce shape.  Cutting the apple different ways also presents the seeds differently with one presenting a star like shape in the centre (see photo).  Once we finished printing with our apples, we glued on the uppercase and lowers letter Aa onto the painting as shown in the above first photo above.
