Counting Numbers 1 – 10 activity provides children with an opportunity to play and count with numbers 1 – 10. Hanging the numbers from 1-10 with pegs along a string is motivating, engaging and fun for kids. They are moving about, bending over, moving from one end of the string to the other.
This activity can easily be adapted for a range of abilities which I explain in more detail below. It also comes with free printable number cards!
What you will need?
You will need string, 10 pegs, printable number cards and gift tags. I absolutely love gift tags and they are great for so many activities. I wrote numbers 1-10 on each gift tag.

To help hang the string line up, I used 3M Command Removable Hooks. These are perfect for temporary activities and when used as directed, they can be removed without damaging the surface.
Let’s Play
This activity can be adapted to suit a range of abilities. Complete only numbers 1-3 or 1-5 and as the child develops add 1 number at a time. Alternatively you can write the numbers on each of the cards and the child can ‘match’ the number tags to the numbers on number cards. This is still great exposure towards number recognition, the child is looking at the different number shapes and matching them the same number and also naming them.
Some Ideas:
- Arrange the pictures cards from the lowest number to the highest. Count out loud and point to each picture to find out how many.
- Match the number on the gift tag to the number collection (number of pictures) on the cards.
- Leave the activity hanging up for a couple of days (or until your child loses interest). They will keep coming back and playing with the cards in a less formal setting. They will experiment, try different things and possibly ask questions such as: is this number 8?
- Jumble the number gift tags around and ask your child to put them back in the correct order.
- Remove one number gift tag and ask your child which one is missing.

- Recite number names in order, it may start with 1-3, 1-5 and upwards to 10
- Recall what number is missing in a number line 1 to 10
- Recognise numerals initially to 5 and then to 10 and begin to order them
- Recognise small collections in a group, which one has more and which one has less, such as 1 is less than five because there is less pictures on the card then there is one five.
When all the numbers from 1 – 10 are hanging in a row, point at each number and count out loud. This consolidates and reinforces the learning of numbers 1 – 10.
