Number Cookies

Fun numeracy activities for kids

An irresistibly yummy numeracy activity for kids!

So much learning happens when we cook with our kids.  The social interactions, processing information, following directions, problem solving and coordination.

What you will need?

You will need Easy Cookie Dough Recipe, number cookie cutters and icing.  We used icing tubes but you can alternatively use a plastic zip lock bag and cut a small hole to squeeze the icing out.

Let’s Play

Working and developing those fine motor skills.  All this squeezing, pushing, and rolling are strengthening the hands, wrist and fingers in preparation for reading and writing.

Let’s Learn

Hand- eye coordination, spatial awareness and problem solving are also getting a work out; placing and pressing the cookie cutters to make best use of the space.  In other words, more cookies!

We placed our left our number cookies on the baking paper and directly placed it onto the baking tray.

Let’s Create

Who can resist??  A few cookies made it into our mouths before they even got iced.  It’s all part of the fun!  Icing the cookies was good practise for writing the numbers in the right starting position and sequence.

There are several great numeracy learning opportunities, such as talking about what number it makes when you put a 1 and 7 together, 17.  We also laid the numbers in a row from 1 to 9.

Learning Opportunities

  •  Sensory- hands on feeling and manipulating the dough through the senses.
  • Fine motor skills- strengthening little muscles through manipulation and moulding the cookie dough.
  • Hand and eye coordination- watching and doing and coordinating these actions.
  • Language development – cooking is a social activity requiring speaking and listening, also developing vocabulary.
  • Self-esteem- a sense of pride and achievement
  • Numeracy- number recognition and sequencing

  1. Thanks so much for all the great ideas you have here … I came across your blog the other week and think it is just great. We might give these cookies a try today!

  2. Thanks-fun and so much learning. I might try with my 2.5 yo and also might try rolling long snakes and forming the numbers ourselves. Lots of chances to identify and talk about numbers during cutting, decorating and eating. Thanks Janice, am loving your blog for interesting, simple, effective ideas
