Many Ways to Play with Lego Duplo

Many ways to play with Lego Duplo

LEGO® DUPLO® is one of these toys that will grow with your child/ren, be utilised in a number of play opportunities, it is durable, and comes in bright and fun colours which grab the attention of curious toddlers and kids. The size of the LEGO® DUPLO® bricks is perfect for little fingers to grasp, hold and manipulate.

When planning activities for my children, I get excited about the endless opportunities LEGO® DUPLO® offers. LEGO® DUPLO® is fabulous for building and constructing but can also be utilised for children’s learning and play times. I have included 4 play ideas today using LEGO® DUPLO® that will engage your child, creatively and imaginatively and promote learning and development.  The ideas and play opportunities are endless!

Build Stories: Driving in the Snow

Build Stories with Lego Duplo

Imaginative or pretend play is essentially when children are building their own stories and acting out various experiences they may have had or something that is of some interest to them. They are experimenting with decision making on how to behave and are also practising their social skills.  To absorb those experiences and make sense of the world, they need to be engaged in imaginary play.

Using our LEGO® DUPLO® bricks we created our very own imaginary Snowy Road Scene for Miss 4 to engage in pretend play. We created a Snow Plough Truck, tunnel, traffic lights and fuel tank using the Duplo bricks.  The road tracks were made using coloured electrical tape and for the snow, we sprinkled on soap flakes.  The Snow Plough Truck was great for pretending to clear the soap flakes snow.

Miss 4 spent hours playing and pretending that cars were getting stuck in the snow, snow storms, clearing snow from the roads with the plough truck and so much more.

Make Adventures: Painting with Lego Duplo

Make Adventures with Lego Duplo

A more creative type of play provides children with the opportunity to make their own adventures and discover new worlds in an unstructured and self-directed way. It allows children opportunity to free their imaginations, invent new ideas and build their self-esteem as they feel a sense of pride and achievement in completing the activity.

It also encourages self-expression, emotional and language development, fine motor, coordination and concentration skills.

Setting up opportunities to learn is a great way to encourage this creative play. Providing the tools such as the LEGO® DUPLO® cars and paint soaked sponges encourages an opportunity to play creatively, self-directing what will happen next.   We also utilised the opportunity to learn about colours as Miss 4 made 3 coloured cars and matched them to the coloured paint.

There was lots of printing, swishing, dragging and twirling of the Duplo cars. Later Miss 4 moved onto painting with the individual Lego Duplo bricks and then her fingers and hands.

Play and Discover: Match the LEGO DUPLO Brick

Play and Discover with Lego Duplo

LEGO® DUPLO® comes in bright, fun and vibrant colours which grab the attention of curious toddlers and kids. The size of the LEGO® DUPLO® bricks is perfect for little fingers to grasp, hold and manipulate. It is also great for challenging children and their abilities.  I could not resist making a few printable cards to create a puzzle-like “Match the LEGO® DUPLO® Brick” to promote learning for Miss 4. She absolutely loves games that challenge her.  It is balanced for her ability but yet still challenging enough for her to feel the sense of achievement and pride once she has completed it.  Learning is fun when the activity is pitch at the right level of development and is not too challenging.

The “Match the LEGO® DUPLO® Duplo Brick” Printable Cards is a learning opportunity that encourages and challenges children to think and develop strategies on how to achieve the goal of completing the matching game. Children need to think about the colour, size and shape of the LEGO® DUPLO® Bricks. This process involves problem solving, reasoning skills and developing solutions which can later be transferred into their personal life.

    ..

  20. I work at a school with children with a disability.
We try to give the children sensory input as much as possible.
Duplo is recognised by (most of) them and it easy to clean for us.
The more Duplo the better, I like to say…

  21. My two under two love duplo! Sometimes for nibbling, often for building towers to knock down, but always for seeing who can make the most noise rummaging in the box!

  22. LEGO DUPLOs have so many motor skill and reasoning possibilities disguised in fun! My toddler girl would love to stack and build with them. 27. I am amazed at my daughters creativity & imagination & these Lego Duplo Bricks will enhance the experience of playful learning.

  28. My little boy would love a Lego set of his own. He plays with his daddy’s old set when he visits his granny and grandpa but does not have a set at home. He loves putting the blocks together and playing with the cars, people and animals. It not only helps fine motor skills but it one of the few toys that he can play with for hours as it feeds the imagination.

  29. We love our DUPLO we got for our 4 year old when he was young and are now handing down to our 1 year old. If I won this DUPLO set I would donate it to our daycare’s Christmas appeal so that needy kids in our community could experience receiving something ‘brand new’ they could treasure for a long time.

  30. My son loves to play with cars and lego. Specially firetrucks. This would help him with his development skills of colors and putting blocks together.

Lego kit with a story book where we build a plane and a car. He enjoys reading the book with us and building along with the pictures. He is our first child so we are building our collection of toys, puzzles, etc. These Lego cars would be a fun addition for him to learn and grow with as he grows.

  41. Miss 2, 4, 6 & 8 would love to add this set to their collection ( which currently has no cars 🙂 ). Duplo is a great Sunday morning activity in our house. Open the box of duplo and off they go. Creative miss 8 builds Eiffel towers, thoughtful miss 6 builds a treehouse , independent miss 4 finds all the animals for a pet shop and enthusiastic miss 2 makes towers while singing to herself, ” build it up, build it up, build it high….”. Duplo gives my four kids the perfect opportunity to play together imaginatively, constructively and cooperatively….and it’s always FUN!

  42. The story telling idea is great … It would be used for a little guy who has language difficulties in understanding narrative … You can imagine how confusing life can be not understanding or following things happening around him … Often seen by others as a naughty boy … The story telling idea is perfect … Play learning is the best. 56. I’m looking forward to my 1 year old daughter getting more involved with Lego and Lego Duplo – i can see the creative possibilities being almost endless! She already enjoys pulling apart everything that i make for her and is starting to stack blocks on her own as well as manipulate some parts with hinges and buttons. I would love to create a collection for her and future children, perhaps i could nurture a future engineer with the help of Lego Duplo!

  57. Hi, there. First of all, really I appreciate your brilliant post. I had fun with my son from your ‘Make Adventures: Painting with Lego Duplo ‘. he enjoyed to play with different colors and lego cars. Even he loved what he achieved from the final result, like an abstract painting. I pinned it on the board later and he smiled to look at it and seemed like following all the colorful traces of his lego duplo cars…
